Anthony Roach, a thirty one year old community enforcement officer in the Teeside area of Eaglescliffe had to face serious health issues because of ill-fitted armour provided to him by the Stockton Borough Council.

The faulty equipment which was given to Anthony in the middle of 2006 caused the development of serious injuries in his shoulders and back. He and other officers made several complaints but they were unable to get any reaction from their bosses for a long time. Later, Anthony was given lighter work but the harm was already done.

The council, like every employer, is under a legal obligation to provide all the personal protective gear that is required for the health and safety of its employers. The council has to provide this equipment free of cost and has to repair and change it whenever necessary.

The council failed in fulfilling its legal obligation and was ordered to pay above £50,000 as legal costs and £2,000 as compensation to Anthony by the Middlesborough County Court.
